Can You Get Free Online Backup?

In the never ending quest to save money, many people will ask if there is a way to get free online backup. The answer is yes and no. Free online backup is attainable, but it will come with restrictions.

The online backup company you look at will depend on the amount of free service you can get. Some offer nothing for free. However, many online backup companies will allow you to try their services for free for a set amount of time with no restrictions. While the trial period is free, you will have to pay for the service if you wish to continue using them after it is over.

There are still other online backup services that will allow you to use up to a certain amount of storage space for free. The amount will vary, but it usually won’t be all that much, maybe 2GB or so. While the storage amount isn’t all that much, it is nonetheless free and if you find the right company, you can even get this without having to give your credit card number.

For true unlimited online backup, you will have to pay for it. However, most of the more well known names in the industry will allow you to have complete and total coverage on an unlimited basis for as little as $5.00 each month. That is a small price to pay for total peace of mind.

While you could try to find a number of free online backup services that will allow you to store a little bit of data for free in an effort to store all of your data free, the efforts you will put forth will not equal the $5.00 a month in savings. If you only have a little bit of data you need to store, use the free services, otherwise, be fully protected by paying just a little bit with a reputable online backup service.

  • Currently Windows Live SkyDrive offers 25GB of free online storage and puts some pressure on other storage services. Using this storage with Duplicati, leads to a perfect free backup storage.

Duplicati is available for free (open source) and duplicati makes encrypted, remote backups with online storage providers like Windows Live SkyDrive, Amazon S3 and all providers that offer WebDAV, SSH, or FTP interfaces to their storage service.

Would be happy to see a review of Duplicati on this site.
